“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will
fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” -Psalm 23:4
One of our young people shared with me a thought her mother told her. She said when you’re driving at night keep your eyes on what your headlights expose. This is sound advice. As I get older, I find it more difficult to see clearly at night especially if other headlights are shining toward me and even more issue when it’s raining. I find myself slowing down and trying to focus on the area my headlights are illuminating and adjusting my speed to be able to react within that space.
The more I pondered that thought I was reminded of David. Psalm 23 is not just a great psalm but David spending much
time as a shepherd knew exactly what it was like to lead his sheep at night and through narrow paths not knowing what may be lurking beyond the view of his torch. In life if we’re honest with ourselves there is very little we are in control of. We are at the mercy of many things in life and if we continue to strain our eyes to view what is beyond our headlights the result tends to be stress and anxiety. I know it’s easier said than done to just trust God with what we can’t see but it doesn’t make it any less true. God desires us to lay the burden of the unknown on Him.
Scripture continues to confirm we must trust Him and turn from worrying about things beyond our control. Another thought is if I continue to look outside of my view, I’m taking my eyes off what I need to be focused on. Scripture says there is enough evil waiting for us tomorrow we sure don’t need to be worrying about it and add it to today’s concerns. Keep looking with diligence on the road ahead, hands firm on the wheel following the clear path that is laid out before you and trust in Jesus to handle the things we can not see. He has never failed us yet nor will He ever fail us. If we can trust Him with the most valuable commodity we have, our soul, we can surely trust Him to navigate the road ahead.
